There is even a Flickr pool on sashiko! Here is another example of the kaleidoscope quilt block, done in completely different colours to mine. I’ve found a little tutorial on sashiko, and Sharon has stitched a number of beautiful pieces. It is definitely going to be a long-term project for me – I figure about ten years? There’s no hurry! I am a member of Kimono House’s fabric club, so have amassed a nice pile of squares of Japanese fabric which will be showcased beautifully in this quilt. The sashiko stitching makes a beautiful secondary design of circles on a finished quilt piece. Way back in the late 90s, before I even had any kids, quilter Bethany Reynolds developed a piecing technique she called Stack-n-Whack. So effective and simple, but difficult to get perfect. We learned how to do sashiko embroidery, which I particularly enjoyed. One lonely little quilt block (actually, not quite finished)! This is a totally hand-sewn and hand-pieced quilt, which forced me to slow down significantly and enjoy the process. The class ran from 10.00am to 3.00pm and at the end of the day I had finished this: It was arranged by Leanne of Kimono House (there’s a terrific profile of Kimono House here as well). If you have any questions, please contact us here, and we will try to reply quickly.Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking part in a Japanese Kaleidoscope Quilt class with internationally renowned quilter/textile artist Jan Preston. Only on his arrival in America did the marginalizing term “émigré” begin to vanish, replaced first by the notion of citizen, and ultimately by American writer-since it was in America that the invisible became invincible. And as an émigré writing in Russian in Berlin and Paris, he remained invisible to nearly all but his exiled compatriots. As an émigré fleeing the Bolshevik upheavals, and later as a refugee from the Nazis, he escaped the twentieth century’s two great tyrannies. Vladimir Nabokov was once an invisible writer suffering from three of these unhappy conditions: the public, the private, the linguistic. But what of an intrinsic, delicate, and far more ubiquitous private invisibility? All these are rampant and scandalous and undermining. Political shunning-of writers who are made invisible, and also inaudible, by repressive design-results in what might be called public invisibility, rooted in external circumstance: the thuggish prejudices of gangsters who run rotted regimes, the vengeful prejudices of corrupt academics who propose intellectual boycotts, the shallow prejudices of the publishing lords of the currently dominant languages, and finally (reductio ad absurdum!) the ideologically narrow prejudices of some magazine editors. The invisibility of recently dead writers is one thing, and can even, in certain cases (I would be pleased to name a few), bring relief but the invisibility of the living is a different matter altogether, crucial to literary continuity. Yet these eruptions of sudden mufflings and posthumous silences must be ranked entirely apart from the forced muteness of living writers who work in minority languages, away from the klieg lights of the lingua franca, and whose oeuvres linger too often untranslated. As for poor befuddled mystical Jack Kerouac and declamatory fiddle-strumming mystical Allen Ginsberg, both are diminished to Documents of an Era: the stale turf of social historians and excitable professors of cultural studies. Nothing is more poisonous to steady recognition than death: how often is a writer-lauded, feted, bemedaled-plummeted into eclipse no more than a year or two after the final departure? Already Norman Mailer is a distant unregretted noise, and William Styron a mote in the middle distance (a phrase the nearly forgotten Max Beerbohm applied to the fading Henry James). That all this came to be munificently reversed is of no moment: the denizens of Parnassus are deaf to after-the-fact earthly notice belatedness does them no good. Recall Henry James’s lamentation over his culminating New York Edition, with its considered revisions and invaluable prefaces: the mammoth work of a lifetime unheralded, unread, unsold. Recognition, hushed and inherent in the silence of the page, is a reader’s category: its stealth is its wealth.Īnd recognition itself can be fragile, a light too easily shuttered. Fame, by and large, is an accountant’s category, tallied in amazonian sales. What writers prize is simpler, quieter, and more enduring than clamorous Fame: it is recognition. (Fame merits its capital F for its fickleness, Literature its capital L for its lastingness.) Thespians, celebrities, and politicians, whose appetite for bottomless draughts of public acclaim, much of it manufactured, is beyond any normal measure, may feed hotly on Fame-but Fame is always a product of the present culture: topical and variable, hence ephemeral. Writers’ invisibility has little to do with Fame, just as Fame has little to do with Literature. In that time, he, Burroughs, Major Pitcher, and suite of other people camped and tramped (to borrow from the title of a short book Burroughs published, detailing his time spent on the trip) around the Park, watching wildlife and visiting the geyser plains.Īccording to Burroughs, the geysers quickly bored the President, who felt more awestruck with the scenery and the wildlife. The Yellowstone trip lasted a little over two weeks, from April 8 to the 24th, when Roosevelt took the stage to dedicate the Roosevelt Arch. The Elysian was unhitched in Cinnabar, Montana, left in the careful hands of secretary William Loeb, Jr. It must have been a grand sight watching the “Roosevelt Special” (a special six car operation-precursor to the modern motorcade) roll into the Gardiner Basin!īut while the train was impressive (complete with the Elysian car, a “rolling White House” for the President) Roosevelt left all that behind when he went into Yellowstone. Indeed, it was a grand tour, taking Roosevelt to Chicago, north through Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Yellowstone was just one of the stops Roosevelt made in 1903. Rather than family, he traveled with army personnel, experienced guides, and (most notably) naturalist “Oom John” Burroughs. He also took different traveling partners along. Roosevelt wanted to “rough it,” and while some nights were spent in the Norris and Fountain Hotels, there were plenty of instances where the President and company camped, like the one shown below. Roosevelt reportedly suffered from a “rather strained” groin for a few days, making horseback riding uncomfortableĪt any rate, as President, he wasn’t going to make the same mistake. And wife Edith was thrown from a horse, injuring her back badly. In the first place, Roosevelt’s chosen guide, Ira Dodge, got them lost. Admittedly, however, he was disappointed he couldn’t see any big game out in the geyser basins-too many people.įurther, while he reportedly found the Park “had the same rejuvenating effect” as Baden-Baden (a great European spa), the trip took its toll on his family. In 1890, he took a family vacation to the Park and found it overall delightful. In a sense, he was one of the first “glampers” in Yellowstone.įurther, it wasn’t the first time Roosevelt had visited Yellowstone, according to Douglas Brinkley in The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America. Arthur visited in 1883, although he decidedly did not “rough it,” choosing instead to bring a long train of dignitaries and luxuries. It was not the first time a standing President had visited Yellowstone National Park. Indeed, it helped provide the basis for one of his most interesting and radical positions: a new conservation ethic, closely wedded to his identity as an American statesman and citizen. President Theodore Roosevelt’s visit to Yellowstone in 1903 is an integral part to his mystique and legend. But great HDR can be had on other displays, too. For the best possible HDR experience, you’ll want something with VESA’s DisplayHDR 1000 certification, like the ROG Swift PG32UQX, or the Nebula HDR display available on this year’s ROG Strix SCAR 16, ROG Zephyrus M16, or ROG Flow X16. I’m here to tell you: it's time to take the leap. If you’re still using an SDR display, you’ve probably wondered whether HDR is worth it for gaming. For more information on setting up this feature, check out our Auto HDR settings guide. The wacky beans in Fall Guys’ chaotic races are bursting with color, and The Witcher 3’s open world gets a touch more realistic. The neon signs and plasmid powers of BioShock Remastered’s Rapture flare just a bit brighter with Auto HDR turned up, for example. Not every game was made with HDR in mind, but with Microsoft’s addition of Auto HDR to Windows, even classic or casual games can take full advantage of your display too. If you haven’t played Doom Eternal with ray tracing in HDR, you are missing out on something truly special. The flaming heart of my rocket launcher burned brighter, the demonic fires of hell scorched the skies with red-hot fury, and the colorful ammo drops I got from sawing a Revenant in half were more colorful than anything I’d ever seen in a video game before. I originally played Doom Eternal on a high-resolution, high-refresh, standard IPS display - and while it was one of the most intense, heart-pumping gaming experiences I’ve ever had, firing up the game in HDR years later was like re-entering Hell all over again. This extra brightness can also be combined with a wider color gamut to create more vivid, saturated colors than SDR content is capable of. Where an SDR image might show some white puffs against a blue sky, the same scene in HDR shows every ripple in every cloud, allowing for a more lifelike overall scene. Driving through the Mexican desert of Forza Horizon 5, for example, doesn’t have many dark areas on the screen in daytime scenes - but the reflection of the bright sun on my blue Corvette burned vividly, while the clouds in the sky showcase more detail than ever before. It also allows for far more detail in bright areas. HDR’s extra brightness isn't just about making images “pop,” though. Merchant Kale's campsite burned with a fiery intensity, and the extra brightness afforded by the HDR signal made it pop right off the screen when contrasted with the dark, dying lands surrounding the Church of Elleh. But once I flipped HDR on, the world truly came to life. The juxtaposition of its repulsive, twisted monsters with the beautiful, glowing Erdtree was truly something special. When I first fired up Elden Ring, I was enthralled by its unique, horrifying-yet-beautiful open world. But it also allows game developers to master their games with a wider range of brightness and color in mind, giving rise to a new standard: HDR, or High Dynamic Range. That allows deep, inky blacks to coexist alongside bright, detailed highlights in the same scene, making the picture look much better - even in SDR. The latest Nebula HDR and Mini LED displays from ROG use a technology called full array local dimming, which allows the backlight to dim or brighten certain parts of the screen independently. You could crank the brightness higher than that, but your blacks would get brighter or “greyer” alongside the whites, so the dynamic range - the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of an image - would still be rather narrow. Plus, games and movies have been mastered in Standard Dynamic Range for years, which uses a limited color palette and assumes a rather low level of brightness (about 100-200 nits). As a result, black can sometimes look more like dark grey. Typical edge-lit displays can look excellent, but they have one major shortcoming: they can’t show true black, since there’s always a backlight shining through the “black” pixels. As compensation, there are informed liner notes about his enigmatic career, though he's no more peculiar than the music on this disc, which mixes quirky humor with vaudeville music and jazz-boogie piano. That's enough to keep this from being the best single-disc Rose compilation that could have been assembled. Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions, there's nothing from his pair of early-'70s Buddah albums, which leaves a bit of a gap from his prime. Before his electric carrot introduction, Biff appeared on Carson’s network tv show a dozen times in twenty. For collectors, there's a rare non-LP 1969 single, "Take Care of My Brother"/"Myrtle's Pies," taken from sessions for an unreleased album that didn't get far the A-side in particular has somewhat more elaborate production than much of his early material, though it's still not exactly conventional pop. Paul Biff Rose was a voltaic-green yet unpredictably-talented Hollywood sketch-writer/comedian who worked with George Carlin and Mort Sahl before launching his own solo songwriting career behind a piano in the late 1960s. The most famous of his songs, "Fill Your Heart" (covered by David Bowie on Hunky Dory), is here, of course, as is "Buzz the Fuzz," which Bowie can be heard doing on a live 1970 bootleg (but never officially released). The result is one of the better albums from a period when everyone seemed to be taking themselves far too seriously, and like all great albums, there is clearly something to be taken for our time as well.Fill Your Heart with Biff Rose does a good job of drawing 18 tracks from Biff Rose's 1968-1985 recordings about two-thirds of it is taken from his pre-1973 output. Lyrics to Biff Rose Molly: When I was a young man I ran away from home I went to join the circus I went to see the cotton candy whirl And make me lots on money on my own For molly, oh my pretty Molly Shes waiting all alone Someday soon I will return to her. Rose's wandering piano numbers had the continuity to bring both together. It is the rare musician that can be honest enough to approach their subject matter through everything from stone faced wit to heart-on-sleeve introspection. Miraculously though, the record manages to turn the tone on its head with brooding, introspective tracks like "To Baby" and "Son in Moon." Whatever the mood, Rose manages to string together the collection with aggressively adept piano playing that reveals the sensitivity and rapid finger motions that are the result only of classical training. He unravels a more poignant attack on the title track, reminding the listener that "the force of deception has uneven rhythms." He casts himself as an outsider with a playful attack on his songwriting brethren with "I'm new at writing protest songs/sometimes I slip and use clichés." The use of a Moog on two of the tracks, one courtesy of Van Dyke Parks, only adds to the bizarre swirling time capsule that Rose pulls from both the folk and circus traditions. Whimsical clap-alongs like "Color Blind Blues," "Evolution," "American Waltz," and "Ballad of Clichés" accent Rose's skill at societal commentary.
